From Trainee to Success: A Journey Through 5C Services
Here at 5C, we pride ourselves on our successes supporting new entrants into the sector, providing an opportunity and platform for them to launch their IT career.
After all, our Technical Director began as a trainee himself with nothing more than a keen interest in IT and a willingness to learn.
Meet Edmund Wozencraft, a former apprentice at 5C Services, who has a lot to share about his experience with the company.
Edmund was kind enough to take some time to answer a few questions about his journey from Trainee to 1st Line Technical Engineer, and how the experience has impacted his future career plans.
What was your overall experience as a trainee at 5C Services?
Beginning at 5C, I had no previous experience managing networks and the training I recieved was specifically targeted for my level which was perfect. I was never given a job I could not handle without the full support of an experienced engineer. On top of which the support I received was granted without a shred of belittlement or disrespect, they understood that the subjects we were looking at were completely new to me and the anxiety that can induce.
What was the most valuable aspect of your training at 5C Services?
Without a doubt, the most valuable aspect would be how to go through the process of troubleshooting. As no matter what the issue is, the resolution can be found by eliminating what isn’t causing the problem. To which I have had to apply to everything throughout my position here and even aspects of my personal life.
How did 5C Services support you during your apprenticeship, both professionally and personally?
When I started, I had made clear that I would be starting counselling for anxiety and depression. Not only were those points taken extremely professionally, giving me a private space to take those meetings, but throughout I have had constant positive reinforcement to ensure I felt welcomed and comfortable in the company. I couldn’t be more thankful for what they did during that time.
What was the most challenging aspect of your apprenticeship at 5C Services and how did you overcome it?
The most challenging aspect of the position is the expansive knowledge base. The number of different aspects of managing a network from a user’s interface to setting up server communication services. Thankfully the variety of knowledge is shared communally, and explored and expanded constantly.
How did you feel about the work-life balance during your apprenticeship at 5C Services?
The balance was exactly what I was looking for, being a 9-5 job and the manageability of incoming tickets/jobs, it didn’t require me to do too much learning outside of work hours, though I certainly would advise delving into some training outside of work; But I was completely in control.
What did you learn about the industry and the company during your apprenticeship at 5C Services?
Everyone in the company knows the industry is ever changing and knows that with most new processes and services, there is a learning curve to come with it, it just depends on how steep or steady an incline you make it.
What was the best thing about working with your team during your apprenticeship at 5C Services?
I was able to get support from the entire team; If I was working through something and get to a point where I hit a brick wall in my processing, the team was there to back me up either asking me the right questions I would need to ask myself or guide me through the process. Incredibly valuable.
How has your apprenticeship at 5C Services impacted your future career plans?
I had expected to jump from job to job throughout my life as I hadn’t expected I could find a position that I would be happy being my career. That has changed, I have found my career.
Training and development programs are designed to meet the needs of each individual trainee and provide them with the necessary tools and knowledge to succeed.
